It is a well known fact that this book was the first volume of a textbook meant for... who are more ambivalent about attachment theory. Thus, the potential confound effects of attachment style on subjective level of needs for control may need to be considered when interpreting the association between attachment style and perceived stress. Strengths and limitations {#Sec14} ------------------------- A major strength of this study is that it employed a strong design to be able to compare our findings with earlier studies, which have examined the effects of attachment on perceived stress using mainly self-report measures \[[@CR12]--[@CR15]\]. Furthermore, the duration of the present study was fairly long compared to most other studies. The use of an informant-report measure of attachment provided a more objective measure of attachment style (i.e., it did not rely on self-report) which is generally considered to be superior to a self-report measure \[[@CR54]\]. Moreover, the sample represents the general working population and no selection was made on attachment group, which made this sample more generalizable compared to previous studies on this topic. However, this study had some limitations. The sample was slightly older than in other studies, which may have affected the generalizability of the results. Attachment styles and perceived stress are associated with particular constructs and predictors. However, the participants in our study reported marital, social, financial and vocational problems and used alcohol and drugs, which may have affected the generalizability of our findings. Moreover, no distinction was made between the different types of attachment, and thus, no inference can be made on the type of attachment style associated with perceived stress. Moreover, it would have been interesting to include a measure that would assess the duration of the stress, to be able to investigate whether the associations found in this study would have remained over time. Moreover, it would have been interesting to include a measure of anxiety and depression, as these variables are frequently related to perceived stress. Finally, another limitation is that all measures were based on self-report and thus, it is not possible to exclude the possibility of common method bias. In conclusion, this study found that there was an association between the adult attachment style and perceived stress among long-term couples. As perceived stress is often a precursor to several mental health problems, such as depression, anxiety and 648931e174
